Cardiovascular exercise
is the best way to boost the metabolism and burn calories. However, that evening jog or aerobic DVD can get stale after you’ve done it a few dozen times. To stick with your cardio workout, it is a good idea to mix things up a bit. We have 10 fun cardio routines that will rev up your energy level and drop the extra pounds. Check out these workouts for fat burning fun.

1. Running

Many fitness buffs actually enjoy running, especially when you can take your run on the treadmill in front of your favorite television show. However, running outside is also a pleasant way to burn calories if you have a picturesque trail nearby.

2. Step Aerobics

All you need to get started on this cardio routine is a step and an instructional DVD. This is an especially effective workout if you are trying to tone the buttocks, hips and legs.

3. Yoga

Yoga may not be the first workout to come to mind in the cardio department, but Ashtanga yoga gives you an aerobic workout while strengthening your core. It is best to find a qualified instructor to teach you the basics before going it on your own.

4. Swimming

If your joints have a hard time taking the constant pounding of a running routine, swimming is an excellent way to burn calories in a low impact environment. In addition, swimming works the entire body, unlike running that only tends to work the lower body.

5. Cross-country skiing

This can be a great way to enjoy the great outdoors and get a serious cardio workout at the same time. Cross-country skiing also works out the entire body like swimming, so your fat burning abilities are amplified even more.

6. Racquetball or handball

These fun sports require plenty of side-to-side motion, so your hips, buttocks and waist get some toning while you are boosting your heart rate. Plus, it’s so much fun, you don’t think about the sweat you are producing.

7. Bicycling

Relive your youth by biking through your favorite trails or taking a spin through the neighborhood. If you want to give your lower body an even better workout, find a spot with a few challenging hills. And don’t forget your helmet!

8. Kickboxing

Got some aggression to work out? Kickboxing might be just the ticket. This cardio workout can be done from the comfort of your living room. Simply don your gloves, pop in your instructional DVD and start kicking.

9. Rock Climbing

Are you an adventure seeker? Perhaps rock climbing is the cardio routine for you. While you may think of this sport as restricted to outdoor venues, there are plenty of great indoor facilities as well. It may be hard to tell if your rising heart rate is due to the aerobic activity or because of the adrenaline rush as you near the top.

10. Roller Blading

Another throwback to our youth, roller blading can be done indoors or out and provides an excellent cardio workout. This routine will tone your lower body more effectively than running and it can be done with your kids.
