What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is one of a number of alternative medical treatments that have gained popularity in recent years and it can also help to relieve pain from other medical conditions such as asthma, migraine headaches, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome among others. Chiropractic care is often associated with other alternative healthcare such as acupuncture and homeopathy as well, but these other therapies are not seen as primary sources of chiropractic care. Chiropractors are trained professionals who have gone on to become osteopaths and are recognized by the American Osteopathic Association and the National Certification Board for Osteopathic Medicine. They do not practice medicine, although chiropractic may be used as a source of therapy along with other health care treatments.

The Body & Spine

Chiropractic care is considered a hands-on specialty, meaning that chiropractors look at the whole body and spine instead of simply looking at the spine. If a chiropractor sees a problem on just one side of the spine, for example, the treatment is different than if he or she looked at the entire spine. Chiropractors believe that the human body and its muscles are connected, which means that fixing one part of the body can affect another. If chiropractic care is used in conjunction with other health care professions, such as physical therapists, chiropractors can work with patients to strengthen their muscles and tissues and improve their overall health. Osteopaths can also see chiropractic patients to strengthen their bones and the spinal cord.

Chiropractor Education

Chiropractors learn to perform a hands-on chiropractic manipulation through training, schooling, and hands-on experience. A chiropractor can train to become a chiropractic physician, and this requires a two-year undergraduate degree at an accredited chiropractic college and a four-year graduate degree at an accredited chiropractic school. Then chiropractic doctors can choose to specialize by enrolling in a one or two year chiropractic advanced clinical degree program. This chiropractic doctor may go on to teach or even open their own chiropractic office. Most chiropractic doctors keep their practice private, working with a handful of patients in their area.
